Certina S.A. was established in 1888 by the brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth in Grenchen, Switzerland and rapidly gained recognition for the creations of luxury timepieces which were characterized by uncompromising perfection. In 1983, Certina joined the SMH, the Swiss society for microelectronics and watch industry AG, which is now the Swatch Group, and enjoys great popularity as a brand for sports watches. In 1959, the engineers of Certina developed the so-called DS-principle. The Double-Security-System marked an innovation in water resistance and robustness of watches. The "Double Security" includes a very resistant case which keeps the movement protected also under the most extreme conditions and the crown is secured by a screw cap preventing that humidity seeps inside the timepieces. A further benefit of this system is that shocks onto the crown are absorbed from the case and is not directly passed on to the movement.
