Our next candidate, which also understands the Dégradé principle and is an exotic through and through, is three orders of magnitude above the Rado: the U-Boat Darkmoon in the RED 44 SS SOLEIL version (Ref. 8697/B). The Italian work of art by Italo Fontana brings a full 44 millimeters of diameter to the wrist, which are, however, not the highlight of the U-Boat. That honor goes to the dial, which, like the entire case, is filled with an oily liquid that creates an extreme depth of color and endearing air bubble. A mechanical caliber would not work in oil, so the propulsion is provided by a Ronda quartz movement. Jewelry meets engineering: despite its petite 32 millimeter diameter, the Union Glashütte Sirona (Ref. D006.207.16.426.00) manages to steal the show from many a larger watch. Responsible for the curious looks is the unique sunburst finish, paired with a perfect color match of dial and leather strap. To bring radiant accents to the dark red sea of elegance, the ladies’ watch is crowned by eight brilliant-cut diamonds and reveals absolute attention to detail, which extends from the automatic movement U2892-A2 to the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides and the individual shape of the winding crown. No question: the red Sirona is an eye-catcher, but in an elegant way. Less festive, but all the more sporty is the Tag Heuer Formula 1 Quartz Chronograph 43mm (Ref. CAZ101AN.FT8055): It’s not a red dial alone, but the combination with a spectacular sunburst that makes this quartz-powered timepiece from La Chaux-de-Fonds so special. With 200 meters of water resistance, it is the most robust member of our “red club,” but it masters the art of color matching just as flawlessly. Thus, the masculine instrument is delivered on a bright red rubber strap, which matches the dial first-class. The black accents from the pushers and bezel to the tricompax layout are also used harmoniously and turn the 43-millimeter behemoth into the Ferrari of the wrist. Red lacquer, black tires – the mental leap to Maranello is not far.

4.999 pieces: Tissot T-Trend Glam Sport Danica Patrick Limited Edition

Female power par excellence: In 2008, U.S. car racer Danica Patrick stunned her male opponents by becoming the first woman ever to win an IndyCar Series race. The driver with a penchant for Swiss-made Tissot timepieces also proved herself in the ultra-tough races of the NASCAR Series until 2018. In her honor, the prominent manufacturer from Le Locle launched a limited watch series of 4,999 that combines the ornate character of a ladies’ watch with powerful facial features.

A wide bezel, robust stainless steel case and sapphire crystal form the hard base of the Tissot Glam Sport, while fine lines with brilliant-cut diamonds and a delicate mother-of-pearl dial form the soft facet of this ergonomic masterpiece. Slightly curved, the 32-millimeter slim work of art with its solid bracelet fits around the wrist as if cast in one piece. 1.959 Exemplare: Seiko Prospex 1959 Alpinist Limited Edition

In 1959, Seiko ventured into the sports watch segment for the first time: the traditional Japanese brand created the Alpinist especially for mountaineers and recreational athletes, whose name comes from the mountain-shaped, pointed markings in the dial at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. To celebrate the round birthday, the company reflected on its Black Forest homeland in 2021, which is written all over the face of the unisex models, which are still 39.3 millimeters tall. Ornithologists may recognize the first variant (Ref. 27/4131.00), which, with its bright red accents on the dial and gray strap, is based on the look of the species-protected capercaillie. The material of the bracelet is particularly exciting, a leather and loden combination (loden is robust wool).

The second version (Ref. 027/4132.00) is dedicated to the Black Forest fir, whose bark structure is immortalized in the leather strap of the timepiece and its annual rings in the case back.
