« What do bar, meter and ATM mean? »

When watch manufacturers specify water resistance, three units of measurement compete with each other. Laypeople also justifiably question this: Isn’t it irrelevant for everyday life that you could dive down to 100 meters if the watch is water-resistant to 10 or just 5 ATM, for example? A little basic knowledge provides the “aha” effect and a feeling for which water resistance suits your personal lifestyle.

Proof of love for the movement – protection against water pressure

If a movement gets wet, it is at least damaged. If high pressure causes the case glass to open or the movement components to move out of position, the timepiece is destroyed. These facts suggest that wristwatches should always be designed to be waterproof. Special design concepts and materials are used to prevent moisture from penetrating the inside of the case. Inexpensive fashion watches that are advertised as water-resistant leave it at that. They don’t immediately give up the ghost when they meet a few raindrops, but remain extremely water-resistant.

The higher the water column, the greater the weight that is exerted on the watch and the waterproofing measures. The water resistance therefore correlates with the pressure resistance, which is determined by standardized test procedures. The measuring unit “atmosphere” is a suitable way of communicating the test results, which is used as an abbreviation in the manufacturer’s statement “5 ATM waterproof” and is widely used in product descriptions.

© Tunatura – stock-adobe.com

The focus of the measurements: Pressure loads due to water columns

In science, “ATM” is considered obsolete. The preferred unit for physical pressure is “bar”, which refers to the ancient Greek word “barýs” (heavy). From a layman’s perspective, the measurement terms refer to the same thing: if an object is immersed 10 meters deep in water, it is subjected to a weight of around 1 kilogram per square centimetre – by the column of water above it.

If a wristwatch can withstand the force of 50 m water depth, it is therefore water-resistant to 5 bar or 5 ATM. Incidentally, not only overpressure can lead to movement damage or cracking of the watch glass, but also underpressure. Special watches for air forces must therefore offer a high level of vacuum resistance.

Watch brands tend to talk about water resistance to a certain diving depth in meters. The layman’s misconception is inevitable: the product characteristic has no meaning if you never wear Masterpieces for water sports. The concise expert objection is: But it does!

Forward-looking feature for everyday companions – Are 5 ATM water-resistant?

If the pipe system is perfectly adjusted, the water flows out of the tap at 2 to 3 bar. However, it is not unusual for it to splash or burst out with more force due to a lack of pressure. If you want to be on the safe side, only trust timepieces that are water-resistant to 5 ATM when washing your hands. The same applies if you are surprised by heavy rain showers during a walk.

Many elegant masterpieces are limited to this protective factor because they are intended more for everyday business or special occasions. Watch out: The men’s models in a watch family are often water-resistant up to 10 ATM and the women’s versions only up to 5 ATM – for example, the Alpine Eagle sports collection from watch manufacturer Chopard and the classically elegant Frederique Constant Highlife everyday watches.

Elegance vs. waterproofness

Provisions for sealing the case take up space and, depending on their extent, have a minimal to strong influence on the design. In the case of jewelry watches or complicated manufacture watches, there is – to put it bluntly – no room for this, which is why they are often only water-resistant to 3 ATM. The protection factor is sufficient for the effect of moisture in the event of rain splashes or sweating. Otherwise, contact with water should be avoided. A popular example is the Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet. The classic versions of this legendary sports watch are water-resistant to 5 ATM, while the Grande Complication Editions are only protected to 20 meters.

Advisable for many leisure activities – 10 ATM water-resistant or special watches

Although you do not dive deep into the pool when swimming, your body movements force the weight of the pool water onto the watch case. According to tests, it is roughly comparable to a water column of 100 meters. Anyone who enjoys varied leisure activities therefore needs a wristwatch that is water-resistant to at least 10 ATM. This means you don’t necessarily end up with the sports collections. In keeping with its pioneering role in terms of water resistance, it is the brand standard that the Rolex collections are water-resistant to at least 10 ATM. The same applies to its sister brand Tudor.

If you want a youthfully elegant automatic watch with the same resilience, take a look at the Nomos Club Campus.

100-meter waterproofness for snorkeling

In principle, a 100-meter waterproofness is also sufficient for snorkelling or smaller diving activities. However, the forces of jerky movements and variable immersion depths can add up. Therefore, robust sports watches that are not only water-resistant to 10 ATM but can withstand 20 bar are more suitable for active vacations by the sea.

Similarly, other leisure preferences need to be taken into account, for example the voluntary fire department. The operating pressure of fire hoses is usually 17 bar. Volunteer firefighters therefore like to wear diving watches or special tool watches with high water resistance and temperature resistance – for example from Sinn.

Related, but not the same – water sports watches and dive timers

If a timepiece is water-resistant up to 10 ATM, it is not automatically suitable for diving expeditions 100 meters below the surface of the sea. The measurement result only refers to the pressure resistance, while other stresses are not taken into account by manufacturers of certified diving watches. The sealing materials in particular must be resistant to salt water and suitable for a wide range of temperatures. The duration of the underwater expedition is also relevant for the functionality.

When saturation diving, it must be borne in mind that helium molecules that have penetrated the watch can exert pressure from the inside. This danger is averted by the helium valve, which opens automatically on many Prof-Tool watches if the pressure inside the case becomes too high. The sporty Seamaster Diver 300 M and professional Planet Ocean 6,000 m from the Omega Seamaster family, for example, were developed specifically for underwater adventures.

Caution: waterproof today, water-protected tomorrow and eventually water-shy

If a premium brand guarantees that its watch models are water-resistant to 10 ATM, you can initially rely on this. After that, watch care determines whether it stays that way. Chemicals in household cleaners can attack sealing components just as much as sweat or salty seawater. It is important to clean watches after such contact.

Various environmental influences impair the effectiveness of sealing materials with the quintessence that the 10 ATM wristwatch is at some point only water-resistant to 5 ATM and ultimately completely unprotected. For this reason alone, regular maintenance should not be avoided and should only be carried out by qualified experts. The same applies to changing the batteries in quartz timepieces, because if this is not done properly, the water resistance will disappear into thin air.

Anyone who compares old models and new design ideas in the range of waterproof Omega watches for men will be overwhelmed by the variety. The Omega Seamaster has been one of the most important diver’s watches since 1948. Fancy a trip back in time? Let’s go!

Sensational start, but in the wrong year…

When the manufacturer presents old models for underwater missions, it starts with the legendary Marine. An extendable strap, square shape and a double case with a plug-in mechanism in which the crown disappeared: the Tool Watch developed in 1932 was brimming with ingenious solutions and even mastered impressive functional tests. Professional divers slipped into their bulky suits to prove its water resistance at a depth of 73 meters in Lake Geneva. The ocean explorers applauded. Otherwise, the feedback was muted because the usefulness was not apparent to the general public.

100th anniversary of the brand and the birth of a brand icon

A few years later, sporty wristwatches hit the nerve of the times. Military missions showed that even in the airborne forces, contact with water was not out of the question and the timepiece had to be able to withstand it. The idea can be transferred to everyday life and in 1948 led to the sports watches that can be recognized today by the seahorse on the back. The robust case, the sturdy lugs and the striking indices and numbers: All of this served functionality and was at the same time aesthetically unconventional for old models. The contrast between the sporty design elements and the noble tenor of the water-resistant watch legend was also striking.

By Pete Karl Ii – Imported from 500px (archived version) by the Archive Team.
Vintage originals are rare and technically outdated. This is why Omega is beaming old watches from the Seamaster Automatic into the present – for example with the Co-Axial Master Chronometer 1948. The homage retains the post-war design, but integrates state-of-the-art watch technology. Case and dial in platinum, indices and hands in gold: the material performance suggests that this nostalgic tribute is no bargain. The Seamaster was well received at its debut because it was made for challenges in the air, on land and at sea. The Omega models in the Aqua Terra family have been building on this promising multifunctionality for several years.

Quality leap from waterproof timepiece to the first diver’s watch

When scuba divers with a penchant for great timepieces see this Omega Seamaster in the model overview, their hearts leap for joy: in 1957, this icon featured a new type of crown seal and a specially sealed crystal of considerable thickness. Its developers also thought about the finer points of safety: the diver’s bezel was designed so that it could not be accidentally adjusted. The name of the first Omegas for professional diving was “Seamaster 300”, which can be misleading: The water resistance system did not extend to 30 bar, but to 20 bar. The same applied to the second edition in 1963, in which the luminous bezel was one of the improvements.

By Kjetil Ree – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=67486886

The diving icon has remained true to its look for many years – apart from varying hand shapes. So that fans of the design icon do not have to fall back on old models, the Seamaster 300 also appears in the current brand range – as a chronometer with caliber 8912 and 30 bar water resistance. As part of the anniversary edition, a stylish version in summery ocean blue was added in 2023.

Tool watches that are not afraid of depths

When you look at old Omega Seamaster models, it becomes clear that the manufacturer focused on improving the technical setting for professional use. To this end, it was also prepared to implement unusual ideas. The Bullhead was originally developed for rally sport with an asymmetrical case shape and operating elements at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions.

By Omega-collector – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=41015521

In addition to the pressure load during deep-sea diving, the penetration of helium atoms is a neuralgic functional risk. The slightest mishap can be life-threatening during extreme expeditions under the sea surface. With the Seamaster Polprof, all aesthetic requirements were therefore put aside and the focus was on deep-sea suitability – with the single-shell case, the bezel lock with red pusher and the counter nut on the crown. The quintessence was a water resistance system that at that time reached a depth of 600 m and in the newer model versions even works up to 1,200 m. When it comes to Omega watches for men, old models with an eccentric look are in demand. The Bullhead and Ploprof therefore still enrich the brand portfolio.

In 1976, the big hit in terms of pressure stability was achieved: aesthetically, it was based on the first diver’s watch, but retained the left-sided crown position of the Ploprof. What was new was not only the domed “Pilot Line” case, but also the water resistance of this Seamaster to 1000 meters. It remained unsurpassed until 2009 and was brilliantly surpassed by the Planet Ocean Ultra Deep in 2019.

During a world record dive, she ventured to the deepest point of the Mariana Trench with Victor Vescovo. The expedition watch with a load capacity of 600 bar has been part of the regular range since 2022. Is a little less enough?
James Bond’s favorite watch – Omega Diver

The chronicles reveal that Omega took a breather from diving watches to come up with a new collection in 1993. Anyone who has old models of the Omega Seamaster Automatic in mind will immediately disagree: it actually made its debut around 20 years earlier, when the Diver 120m was presented as the first chronograph suitable for underwater use. The brand built on this sensation, adding a chic look and giving the sports watch both a helium valve and 30-bar water resistance.

Since then, the Diver has enjoyed a large fan base, which means that there are many old and new versions with the wave pattern on the dial. Classic diving timepieces are just as much a part of the collection as chronographs, where even the most demanding secret agents will find what they are looking for.

James Bond has been committed to the diver’s watch since 1995 and received the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m as a new model: it inspires with a retro look and was seen in the 2021 agent movie “No Time to Die”.

By Basilica9718 – Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=112890517

An Omega Seamaster model overview that covers all the old variants…

…would be endless. If you scroll through the “Vintage Museum” on the brand’s website, you won’t believe your eyes. There are so many old models that even the manufacturer can only sketch some of them. To date, more than 300 calibers have been installed in the diver’s watches. Omega regularly introduces a new model of the Seamaster Diver 300m. The same applies to the Aqua Terra. Diversity is a success factor for the Omega Seamaster, which applies to both old models and new releases. A model history that would fill thick books is the other side of the coin.

Top performance at affordable conditions: Divers up to 1000 euros are among the most popular categories among newcomers to watchmaking and surprise even experienced collectors with their sensational price-performance ratio. But the choice is huge and raises one question above all: Which is the best diving watch up to 1000 euros? Uhrinstinkt magazine presents you with seven candidates that stand at the undisputed top of their segment.

Tissot T-Sport Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80

All-in-one on the wrist: its combination of proud 300-meter water resistance, a Swiss automatic movement with a whopping 80-hour power reserve, and an exciting color gradient on the dial makes the Tissot T-Sport Seastar 1000 Powermatic 80 a hot candidate for the best diver’s watch up to 1000 euros. What others can’t do at three times the price, the 43-millimeter stainless steel behemoth masters with bravura: top performance in every respect.

From the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal to the unidirectional rotating ceramic diver’s bezel, the professional instrument knows no compromises while pursuing a classic Diver aesthetic with perfect legibility. We particularly like the discreet placement of the date at six o’clock. Even a glass back is included in the overall Tissot package, which seems almost too good to be true. There is no shortage of trendy colors: we recommend a dark blue or green dial.

MIDO Ocean Star 200 C Titanium

Titanium is one of the hottest materials in the watch industry, but is rarely found in affordable price ranges. MIDO presents an exciting exception to the light, extremely robust metal with the Ocean Star 200 C Titanium: water-resistant to 200 meters, the 42.5 millimeter strong diver shines with the same 80-hour power reserve as Swatch Group sister Tissot. In addition, the details of the Ocean Star demonstrate that it easily passes as the best diver’s watch up to 1000 euros: sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides and a ceramic bezel are not a matter of course, even in higher price ranges, while a Day-Date complication and radiant luminous material complete the 200 C’s overall picture. And as if these highlights weren’t enough, MIDO even includes a solid titanium bracelet in the three-digit price tag. If you painlessly forgo a glass bottom, this diver’s watch is a terrific all-rounder for everyday wear, sports, and serious water fun.

Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman Auto

The third Swatch model in the bunch demonstrates how fiercely contested the title for the best diving watch up to 1000 euros is. First designed in 1951 for the hardy “Frogman” diving teams of the U.S. Navy, the modern version of the Hamilton Khaki Navy Frogman Auto bristles with power and immediately catches the eye with the masculine clasp of its crown. The latter is screw-down and allows the Diver a whopping 300 meters of water resistance.

The technical similarities with the Tissot Seastar cannot be overlooked on the inside either, as the automatic H-10 movement with its 80-hour power reserve makes clear. If you prefer a beefier look, you can opt for the Hamilton and enjoy its moderate diameter of 42 millimeters. The next highlight of the “frogman” watch is protected by anti-reflective sapphire crystal: The sunburst of the dial, which impresses us the most in bright blue. On the wrist, the stainless steel Diver looks like it fits like a glove and permanently conveys the feeling of a higher price range.

Longines HydroConquest Quartz

The same applies to the Longines HydroConquest Quartz, which, compared to the previous divers from Tissot, MIDO and Hamilton, inspires with higher brand prestige within the Swatch universe, but in return swaps the automatic movement for a quartz movement. The first choice for anyone who wants to combine 300-meter water resistance with the highest possible precision and readiness for action at any time.

Even lovers of a classic, unagitated diver look easily see the HydroConquest as the best diver’s watch up to 1000 euros: from the crown guard to the dial, the design radiates pure harmony and is given a modern touch by the typography of the numerals 6, 9 and 12. Applied indices, generously applied luminous material and sapphire crystal with several anti-reflective layers complete the overall package. A big plus point is that the 41-millimeter diameter is perfectly compatible even with slender wrists. If you prefer the same model with an automatic movement, you’ll have to pay just under 1,500 euros.

Seiko Prospex SEA Automatic

When it comes to the best diving watch up to 1000 euros, one brand cannot be missing outside of Switzerland: Seiko. The Prospex SEA Automatic “Diver’s PADI Special Edition” shows how masterfully the Japanese watchmaker combines excellent quality with affordable prices: designed for extreme sports, the self-assured 45-millimeter instrument is primarily suitable for wider wrists and, in contrast to the ETA-based automatic calibers of the Swatch manufacturers, features an in-house drive. The 6R35 provides a decent 70 hours of power reserve and behaves just as confidently as the rest of the watch. 200 meters of water resistance are a matter of course for the Seiko Prospex, the grippy rubber strap a perfect complement and the diver’s bezel an aesthetic highlight: bright light blue accents bring life to the otherwise grayish, rather restrained appearance of the “Diver’s PADI Special Edition”. The perfect distinction from the mainstream.

Tissot T-Sport Seastar 1000 Chronograph

With the 1000 quartz chronograph, Tissot’s Seastar line has another model ready that wants to be the best diver’s watch up to 1000 euros. The Goliath, with a diameter of 45.5 millimeters, certainly has the best chance of winning the title. Thanks to the cost-effective use of a quartz movement, it manages to dominate the mid-three-digit price range with 300 meters of water resistance, a chronograph function and a quick-change bracelet system. The pushers and crown are screw-down, the left-handed bezel is made of aluminum, and the stainless steel bracelet has a practical diver’s extension.
