Rolex – Perfect example of a luxury watch

Why Hans Wilsdorf from Kulmbach took the name Rolex for his company is known. He was looking for a word perfect for printing onto the dials that could be pronounced in many languages of the world. But what is not clear is, what the word means and this will presumably remain a secret of the father of the legendary watch brand. Wilsdorf was working in the watch business several years before the foundation and had an own company when he had the name Rolex patented in 1908. Long before the competitors did even think about it Wilsdorf concentrated on the manufacturing of high-quality wristwatches and soon received awards for his innovative developments. He created cases better protected against humidity, dust and shocks than any other watch before and they got well known throughout the world thanks to intelligent marketing.

There seem to be no limits to Rolex timepieces

Wilsdorf timepiece on the Mount Everest

The first watch on the Himalaya was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual. It accompanied Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary 1953 up to the Mount Everest. Of course, Rolex was sponsor of this spectacle and afterwards paid tribute to the achievements of the pioneers with a special edition which is very popular among watch connoisseurs up to now. The horology owes the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer to the climbers - from which currently still an Explorer I as well as an Explorer II series are on the market.

Mercedes Gleitze and the Oyster

But Rolex timepieces could not only convince in airy heights. Also the element water proved to be a perfect place for the brand with the five-pointed crown. The way for many modern models, such as the Rolex Submariner, the Daytona or the Yachtmaster was paved by the Rolex Oyster. It set new standards in 1927 with the record attempt of Mercedes Gleitze´s swimming through the English Channel. Heavy seas lead to termination of the attempt after 10 hours of permanent stress for timepiece and human. The Rolex Oyster had admirably withstood the pressure peaks in the water. Oyster became the epitome of a watertight wristwatch - a term that characterized the label in numerous model lines and still does. Thus, masterpieces from the collections Submariner, Datejust II, Yachtmaster and many other have the significant name Oyster on the dial.

With the Oyster technology, Rolex plunged into new depths. When the deep water boat Trieste docked on the bottom of the Challenger Deep in 1960, the matching watch by the label from Geneva had to be present. Based on the Oyster, the master watchmakers from the Geneva brand created the Deepsea Special specifically for the endeavor to withstand the meters of depths required for the Mariana Trench expedition.

First Oyster then Perpetual

Just as legendary for numerous models like the Rolex Daytona, Submariner or Yachtmaster just as indispensable as the Oyster principle, is the automatic winding the watch brand first integrated in models under the name Perpetual in 1931. Very soon, the terms Rolex, Oyster and Perpetual were inseparably linked. Up to now, they are indispensable in each Yachtmaster, Datejust and Day-Date and form the basis for the unparalleled success of a company that currently equips numerous collections and model lines with the principle Oyster Perpetual:

  • Air King
  • Cosmograph Daytona
  • Date 34
  • Datejust II , Datejust 31, Datejust 36, Datejust 41
  • Day-Date, Day-Date 40
  • Explorer I, Explorer II
  • GMT-Master II
  • Lady-Datejust 26, Lady-Datejust 28

Of course, the world-famous brand is for ladies and gentlemen. The noble timekeepers are made of finest gold or very robust stainless steel. From 18-carat gold models which bezels set with diamonds up to simple dresswatches you can find everything your heart desires. The collections time and time again manage not to follow the dictation of fashion but present an own, expressive look. But not only the look of the different models make hearts beat faster, also the used technology is inspiring.
