“Exclusivity in Its Purest Form”
Unrivaled complexity, ultimate exclusivity, and a musical chime: minute repeaters sit at the very pinnacle of mechanical watchmaking. Only a handful of brands possess the know-how needed to develop and manufacture the most demanding of all complications. Here are the most popular and most beautiful repeater wristwatches – perhaps your own personal grail watch is among them.
Breguet Classique Grande Complication 5447
Wearing any of Breguet's timepieces is a privilege in itself. Founded in 1775, the manufacture is inextricably linked to the name of its founder, Abraham-Louis Breguet – arguably the greatest watchmaker of all time – and over the course of its history has introduced dozens of groundbreaking innovations, such as the tourbillon and the perpetual calendar. But the Classique Grandes Complications 5447 is no ordinary collection. It stands at the summit of everything the watchmakers of L'Abbaye, Switzerland, have created in nearly 250 years of history.
Like almost all repeater watches, it features an inconspicuous slide on the left side of the case to activate the minute repeater. In contrast, the dial design is outstanding and anything but inconspicuous: hand-guilloché and silvered, the gold dial reveals the enormous effort that went into it – just as the sapphire caseback reveals the majestic engravings of the hand-wound caliber 567 RMP1. You would need days, probably even weeks, to pay every tiny detail the respect it deserves.
Together with the perpetual calendar, including a retrograde month display and a classic moon phase, the movement comprises 491 components, packed into a comfortable 40-millimeter case. Available in either 18-karat white or rose gold, the 5447 is by no means made for show-offs, but rather for connoisseurs of haute horlogerie with a penchant for understatement. And once the tiny hammers of the repeater work their musical magic, the manufacturer's price of €295,710 slowly begins to make sense.
Blancpain Villeret Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback
Our contender from Blancpain comes with quite a long name. Its 45-millimeter diameter makes it one of the largest classic repeater watches on the market, but given the complexity of caliber 2358, the size is justified. While other wristwatches earn a place among the horological elite on the strength of their repeater alone, the Villeret adds a flyback chronograph to its in-house carrousel, bringing the total to an astonishing 543 movement components. The carrousel is an alternative construction to the tourbillon – in this case a flying one – and it is clearly visible through the skeletonized dial at six o'clock – as are countless other components of the handcrafted automatic movement.
Unlike Breguet's 5447, it offers not only automatic winding and a longer power reserve of 65 rather than 40 hours, but also the commanding presence of its 18-karat rose gold case and its skeletonization. As a result, the repeater wristwatches from Le Brassus project their prominent status more openly – and thanks to their sheer size, they also produce a more powerful minute repeater chime.
Add to that one of the richest company histories of all: founded in 1735, Blancpain is the oldest existing watch brand in the world and has produced exclusively mechanical timepieces throughout its nearly 300-year existence. For less than €10,000, this underrated manufacturer already makes the allure of haute horlogerie tangible. The Carrousel Répétition Minutes Chronographe Flyback couldn't care less about such price ranges, though; it comes in at €405,100. A remarkable sum, even among repeater watches. Blancpain offers “affordable” alternatives in the form of the Villeret Repetition Minutes.
Patek Philippe 5316P
When it comes to prestigious repeater watches, hardly anyone can hold a candle to Geneva stalwart Patek Philippe.
Regarded by many enthusiasts as the best watch brand in the world, the company presented its first repeater wristwatches in 1924 and has since incorporated this prestigious complication into more than 30 references.
Today, every Patek Philippe repeater watch is personally tested by President Thierry Stern – but prospective buyers, too, must accept not only waiting times of 6 to 16 months but also a vetting of their personal suitability. The manufacture, founded in 1839, wants to know its finest timepieces are in safe hands.
That is likely to apply especially to the repeater watches of the 5316P line. Distinguished by the gleam of its black enamel dial and a retrograde date, this Patek Philippe, unveiled at Baselworld 2017, unites all three major complications in a case measuring just 40.2 millimeters: minute repeater, tourbillon, and perpetual calendar. Its design is understatement in its purest form, yet connoisseurs will feel their hearts race at the mere sight of this legendary platinum watch. It is so exclusive, even among repeater watches, that instead of a price, Patek Philippe's website merely offers the polite note "price upon request."
Even so, it is known what this masterpiece, together with its hand-wound caliber R TO 27 PS QR, changes hands for: roughly €700,000 to €800,000 has to be wired to Geneva for these repeater watches. But even Patek Philippe enthusiasts without that kind of budget should definitely be familiar with the name 5316P.
Affordable repeater watches? Not a chance
These are enormous sums, and in light of them our headline "most popular repeater watches" should, of course, be taken with a wink. Within the horological universe, repeater wristwatches are an exceptional delicacy whose production requires the utmost expertise and weeks of handwork by the world's most talented watchmakers. At Patek Philippe, for example, there are only 10 to 15 such people in the entire company.
That is why there is no way to get your hands on a minute repeater at anything close to an affordable price. Even on the pre-owned market and for simple versions without additional complications, your chances below €50,000 are slim.
A fact that only fuels the fascination of repeater watches even further: they will always stand at the undisputed summit of horology, demonstrating the timeless beauty of mechanical excellence. Even for the majority who cannot afford a repeater.
