If you browse the model lineup of Mühle Glashütte, there's no getting around the 29er sports collection. Available for women and men, it ranks among the brand's most versatile lines with more than 20 references, combining 100 meters of water resistance with a crisp, modern design. We explain where the Mühle 29er gets its name, why it's the ideal candidate for a one-watch collection, and which version suits you best.

What Does the Name Mühle 29 Stand For?

It doesn't take much imagination to suspect a link between Mühle's nautical heritage and the 29er. A quick calculation shows just how strong the maritime influence on this family-owned company is: from its founding in 1869 until its first wristwatch in 1996 – roughly 84 percent of its history to date – the company mainly produced nautical instruments such as marine chronometers, weather stations and tide clocks. It's a legacy the brand proudly carries over to its wrist-worn models. In the case of the Mühle 29, the reference is to a small sailing dinghy called the 29er, which is raced at youth world championships and is known for being particularly fast, agile and dynamic.

According to the manufacturer, these are qualities its namesake timepieces are blessed with as well. On top of that, the dinghy is a so-called one-design boat, meaning every example is identical, from hull to sail. The same principle shapes the Mühle Glashütte 29er: although complications and colors vary from model to model, the case shape, dial design and distinctive crown guard remain central constants. A third parallel to the boat is its entry-level positioning: just as the 29er dinghy is meant to prepare sailors for the Olympic 49er class, the Mühle 29 could serve as a stepping stone to the Glashütte brand's pricier models. But it doesn't have to – because on its own merits, it's a bull's-eye.

What All Versions Have in Common

Before we get to the range of models, it's worth looking at what all Mühle 29 editions share. This mainly concerns the case, which is always made of stainless steel and pairs steep flanks with crisply defined, angular lugs. There are no gold-plated or PVD-coated versions, but the mix of polished and brushed surfaces gives each reference plenty of visual variety. Water resistance of 100 meters comes standard, ensured by a screw-down crown with a conspicuous crown guard. The latter reinforces the watch's bold presence and protects against side impacts. The 29er fends off scratches with anti-reflective sapphire crystal, which is just as transparent as the exhibition caseback. More on the automatic movements ticking beneath it later.

A fundamental hallmark of the Mühle 29 – with the exception of the slim Casual models – is the beveled rehaut. This raised dial ring lends the Glashütte timepieces a strong sense of depth and usually carries a minute track, which on the 29er Zeigerdatum is replaced by a scale for the 31 days of the month. All versions get a premium touch from applied minute markers, which is confirmed by their solid feel. Hold a Mühle 29 in your hand and you won't notice any difference in quality compared with more expensive collections. That goes a long way toward explaining the line's great popularity.

The Small Ones: Full Performance at 36.6 Millimeters

Dive into this sporty line and you'll find two sizes: 36.6 and 42 millimeters. We like that this isn't a strict split into women's and men's models. Instead, most editions are positioned as unisex watches, so men with slimmer wrists can easily opt for the 36 mm diameter. Choosing the compact model narrows the selection dramatically and automatically gets you a date window at 3 o'clock, paired with either a white or black dial. True to the style of the larger Mühle 29er, a red seconds hand and Super-LumiNova-coated hands and indices are part of the package. On the black leather strap with tang buckle and white contrast stitching, the small 29er costs €1,230, while the metal bracelet version comes in at €1,330.

From Big to Casual: The Larger Models

Opt for the considerably more substantial 42 mm diameter and the door opens to six different configurations. The simplest of them is the 29er Big, which, with its date window, is nothing more than an upsized version of the 36 mm model. Beyond the looks, the movement is also identical to its smaller sibling: a modified Sellita SW 200-1 with the brand's signature woodpecker-neck regulation and a modest 38-hour power reserve. On the metal bracelet, the Big costs €1,530. If you're after a touch of extra functionality, go for the Mühle 29 Tag/Datum: its SW 220-1 adds a day-of-the-week display at 9 o'clock, opposite the date. Instead of black and white dials, this one comes with titanium-gray dials and a sand-metallic rehaut. Price point (metal bracelet): €1,590.

If you find the case heights of the Big (11.3 millimeters) and Tag/Datum (12.2 millimeters) too chunky, we recommend the 29er Casual. As the only Mühle Glashütte 29er without the characteristic rehaut, it brings the height down to 9.75 millimeters together with the SW 300-1. Not a monumental reduction, but clearly noticeable under a shirt cuff. Our favorite detail is the navy-blue grained dial, which makes the Casual the liveliest Mühle 29 and gets you looking forward to your next trip to the sea. On a suede, canvas or classic leather strap, it costs €1,790.

Mühle M29: The 29er for Traditionalists

The prize for the most beautiful design, however, goes to the 29er Zeigerdatum: it's the only member of its collection without any windows in the dial, offering near-perfect symmetry as a result. We find the rehaut particularly harmonious – it carries the eponymous pointer-date complication and stands out from the white dial in a light blue hue. Manufacturer's price (stainless steel bracelet): €1,630. If you're prepared to spend nearly twice that, the Mühle 29 Chronograph gets you the collection's flagship. Powered by the MU 9413 (SW 500-1), it's available with either a white dial or in a reverse-panda look and costs €2,950 on the solid bracelet.

The Mühle M29 collection deserves a special mention. Inspired by the historic Robert Mühle M29 dial gauge, it's the only Mühle 29 with Arabic numerals, which, together with black feuille hands, exude a decidedly traditional aura. The cream-colored dial adds to the classic look as well. If you want to bring the Glashütte brand's historic achievements to your wrist as authentically as possible, order the Mühle M29 on a brown leather strap for €1,430.
