« An Original and Its Alternatives »
In fall 2020, the legendary Rolex Hulk Ref. 116610LV is discontinued and succeeded by the 126610LV. The most important change is the black dial, while the green bezel and the extreme waiting times of the popular Submariner remain. We explain what sets the new Hulk apart and show you great alternatives that get a green luxury watch on your wrist faster and for less money.
The Legendary Hulk: The Original from 2010 to 2020
Unveiled at Baselworld 2010, the original Rolex Submariner Hulk (Ref. 116610LV) causes a stir both inside and outside the watch world and, for a time, even becomes one of the Geneva manufacturer's most popular timepieces. The nickname "Hulk" quickly sticks, because the green dial and bezel inevitably call to mind the Marvel giant and are every bit as eye-catching as his appearance. The overall package wins the market over: an almost magical play of light that shifts the watch's character from vivid light green to refined dark green depending on its surroundings, 300 meters of water resistance, a comfortable Oyster bracelet and a moderate 40-millimeter diameter bring the Submariner such strong sales that buyers soon have to join a waiting list. Only those who budget for a three- to five-year wait for their Rolex Hulk stand a chance of getting the high-profile model. In 2020, when the end of the reference becomes known, prices on both the new and pre-owned markets skyrocket once again.
A Worthy Successor? The New Ref. 126610LV
Many fans had hoped for a continuation of the Hulk. Instead, Rolex delivers a kind of "half" successor with the 126610LV, one that departs from the original in key respects. The green ceramic bezel remains in all its glory (and in the same shade of green!), but the dial turns black – a color combination that parts of the Rolex community call "Kermit." The case changes are more modest than the official increase from 40 to 41 millimeters suggests – surprisingly, the new models even look slimmer and have thinner lugs than the original Hulk.
Inside, the caliber 3125 with its 48-hour power reserve is replaced by the modernized 3235, which runs for a full 70 hours when fully wound. All in all, the 126610LV is a well-rounded package and has no reason to hide behind its famous predecessor. If you want to buy the new Rolex Hulk, you have two options: either pay the retail price of €8,900 and muster years of patience, or order an immediately available piece on the well-known marketplaces for twice the price. If neither option appeals to you and you still want to enjoy that green splendor on your wrist, other renowned brands offer first-rate alternatives.
Best Alternatives to the Rolex Hulk
1. Tag Heuer Aquaracer Hulk
One of them is the Tag Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 (Ref. WBP208B.BF0631), freshly unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2021. At 43 millimeters in diameter, it is noticeably larger, yet thanks to its ultralight titanium case it is also lighter than the Hulk. Its matte case finish is distinctive, setting it apart from the rest of the new Aquaracer line and creating an excellent contrast with the green dial. Like the bezel, the dial strikes a nice balance between intense vibrancy and a serious military touch. While yellow accents emphasize its lively character, the titanium bracelet scores with the same scratch resistance and skin-friendliness as the diver itself. The biggest plus of the new Aquaracer Hulk is its simplified design: less aggressiveness and more elegance make the newcomer look more grown-up than its predecessors. Unlike the Hulk, it is powered not by an in-house movement but by the Calibre 5, based on the ETA 2824-2. That is reflected in the price: at €4,000, it sits miles below the Rolex.
2. Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M
Our "Omega Hulk" (Ref. 220.10.41.21.10.001) is the perfect choice for anyone who doesn't want to buy a Rolex Hulk and is looking for a more elegant alternative to the Submariner. More dress watch, less diver – the motto of this 41-millimeter diving model from Biel shows primarily in its omission of a flashy rotating bezel. Instead, it features an understated fixed stainless steel bezel paired with an extra-dark green dial. The dial carries a striking decorative pattern whose horizontal grooves are meant to evoke the teak decking of luxury yachts. We particularly like the symmetry of the Omega Hulk: arrow-shaped indices, a date at six o'clock and its focus on the essentials give this dive watch, water-resistant to 150 meters, an incredible sense of harmony. Like the Rolex Hulk, the Seamaster draws its power from an in-house movement. The caliber 8900 impresses with a 60-hour power reserve and METAS-certified precision. Price: €5,600.
3. Longines HydroConquest Automatic 41mm
If you want to bring the green-dial trend into your collection on considerably more affordable terms, the Longines HydroConquest (Ref. L3.781.4.06.9) offers excellent value for money. For €1,470, you get 300 meters of water resistance, an automatic movement with a 72-hour power reserve (ETA-based caliber L888) and harmonious proportions in a 41-millimeter stainless steel case.
What makes this all-rounder special is its matte shade of green, which perfectly bridges military seriousness and a refined presence. Not only the dial and ceramic bezel but also the rubber strap come in the signature color. Standout details include the angular crown guard and the large Arabic numerals. Green luxury at an affordable price? No problem with the HydroConquest.
4. Hublot Hulk: Classic Fusion Automatic Chronograph
If, unlike with the Rolex Hulk, you don't want to put up with a waiting list but still want to experience high-end sportiness, the Hublot Classic Fusion Automatic Chronograph Titanium Green 45mm (Ref. 521.NX.8970.LR) steps in as a solid alternative. Its green dial sits on the darker end of the spectrum but has breathtaking radiance and pairs with the lightness of a largely satin-finished titanium case.
The only chronograph on our list is powered by the automatic HUB1143, which is based on the ETA 2892-A2 and incorporates a chronograph module from Dubois Depraz. Visually, the integrated strap is the real eye-catcher, its green alligator version perfectly matched to the dial. But beware: with 50 meters of water resistance, the Classic Fusion can't match the ruggedness of a Submariner. If you want to own the "Hublot Hulk" yourself, the manufacturer's price is €10,700.
