« Our Top 5 Understated Watches »
Many of the best-known timepieces are designed to show off their exclusivity openly and with confidence. Others wrap themselves in refined restraint and reveal their exceptional nature only to a handful of passionate experts. For most enthusiasts, this kind of understatement holds a special appeal. We find understated luxury watches fascinating too, and present our top 5 horological gentlemen.
Nomos Glashütte Ludwig neomatik 41 Datum
Take a pinch of Bauhaus, blend it with classic lines and add an ultra-thin in-house caliber: the basic recipe of the Nomos Glashütte Ludwig in the neomatik 41 Datum version (Ref. 261.S1) comes as no surprise in the Saxon manufacturer's lineup, but it is refined with a few special touches. First, there is the strict limitation to 175 pieces, as the special model was launched in 2020 – together with two more compact special editions – to mark the 175th anniversary of the Glashütte watch industry. Yet the 41-millimeter Ludwig doesn't advertise its rarity anywhere obvious, limiting itself to an inscription with the individual number along the edge of the caseback.
The caseback offers a view of the automatic DUW 6101 through a sapphire crystal window. Regulated to chronometer standards, the movement has a 42-hour power reserve and, thanks to its large diameter, allows the Ludwig a case height of just 7.7 millimeters. Understated watchmaking at its finest. It gets even better on the dial, where an enamel-white surface meets heat-blued hands and what is probably the most elegant date display of all time. For the first time in Nomos' history, it uses Roman rather than Arabic numerals, blending seamlessly into the dial's typography. Retail price: €3,300.
Omega Constellation Globemaster Chronometer 39mm
Understated luxury watches are also a specialty in Biel, where famous collections such as the Seamaster Diver 300M and the Professional Moonwatch actually stand for bold designs rather than understatement. To get to know the Swiss art of restraint, you need a date with the Omega Constellation Globemaster Chronometer 39mm. It masterfully demonstrates that understated watches needn't be boring: both the fluted tungsten carbide bezel and the sculpted "pie-pan" dial give this dress watch a distinctive character.
Our favorite in terms of understatement is Ref. 130.33.39.21.02.001, whose blackened hands and indexes meet an opaline silver dial and a traditional black alligator strap. The watch draws its power from the Master Chronometer 8900, which can be admired through the caseback together with the historic Constellation observatory, and which achieves a 60-hour power reserve thanks to two barrels. In typical Omega fashion, it features a silicon balance spring that contributes to its high magnetic resistance of up to 15,000 gauss. Price: €6,700.
Fortis Spacematic Steel
Grenchen takes a completely different approach to understated luxury watches: Fortis has been producing the Spacematic there since 1960. Having become famous early in its life through its use by NASA's Gemini crews, the watch focuses on pure functionality and is one of those timepieces sold almost exclusively to enthusiasts. Simple but powerful is the motto of the current generation (Ref. F2520002): the 40-millimeter brushed stainless steel case impresses with steep flanks, straight lugs and a grippy crown, while the dial is dominated by three huge Arabic numerals. There, generous amounts of Superluminova meet a grained black surface and a day-date complication whose discs are, pleasingly, finished in the dial color.
Understated watchmaking perfected. The Fortis Spacematic Steel carries the sobriety of its design through to the inside, where the automatic UW-31 (based on the ETA 2836) does its job with familiar reliability. The men's model, water-resistant to 100 meters, is priced at €1,090. If you prefer your understated watch with a white dial, the Stealth White Edition (Ref. F2520003) is available as an alternative for €1,330.
Blancpain Villeret Ultraplate
The Blancpain Villeret Ultraplate (Ref. 6605 1127 55) sits in the shop window at seven times that price. When you first see this haute horlogerie masterpiece from Le Brassus, you may rightly wonder what justifies its retail price of €9,410. No precious metal, no complication, not even a seconds hand – just a 40 x 7.39-millimeter stainless steel case and twelve Roman numerals greet the expectant observer.
What laypeople dismiss as a bad deal reveals itself to connoisseurs as the ultimate form of understatement. Because understated luxury watches from Blancpain have plenty going on inside: although the hand-finished in-house movement 11A4B offers a generous 95-hour power reserve, its 131 components and majestic decoration fit into a height of just 2.8 millimeters. A mechanical tour de force that its discreet owner can admire through a sapphire caseback. The black alligator strap is just as understated as the Villeret itself and can be replaced on request by a more lavish Milanese mesh version (Ref. 6605 1127 MMB, €11,580).
Union Glashütte 1893 Small Seconds
The Nomos Ludwig has already proven that understated watches from Glashütte are true masters of sophistication. However, an enamel look and blued hands are a recipe for success that the neighboring competition also knows how to execute in style. A particularly successful example is the Union Glashütte 1893 Small Seconds (Ref. D010.428.16.017.00). With its 41-millimeter diameter, railroad minute track and sapphire caseback, it resembles the Nomos in several details, but swaps its Bauhaus inspiration for pure classicism and, at 100 meters, offers twice the water resistance.
As befits an understated luxury watch, the 1893 avoids any design experiments and features eleven Arabic numerals in refined typography. Fittingly for the model's name, the typography recalls 19th-century dials and is paired with a central date display within the small seconds subdial. The watch draws its power from the automatic movement U 2899-ZZ6, which sets itself apart from its ETA base with a Union rotor and its own finishing – Glashütte stripes and a 42-hour power reserve included. €1,780.
