Omega Speedmaster First Omega in Space – a tribute to the CK 2998
The Speedmaster CK 2998 was made from 1959 to 1962 and belongs to the second Speedmaster generation. Walter Schirra bought his watch privately and wore it on 3 October 1962 on the Sigma 7 flight of NASA's Mercury programme – the first time an Omega went to space. The First Omega in Space recalls this watch: in 2012 Omega reissued it with calibre 1861 and a flat black dial, and in October 2024 the current generation followed with a stepped blue-grey dial and calibre 3861.
Hand-wound calibre 3861 with METAS certification
The First Omega in Space is powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer calibre 3861, which Omega describes as the latest version of calibre 321 – the movement that flew into space in Schirra's CK 2998. The hand-wound chronograph offers a power reserve of around 50 hours, features a co-axial escapement and a silicon balance spring, and is certified as a Master Chronometer by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), including resistance to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss.
Case, dial and crystal in early-1960s style
The stainless steel case measures 39.7 mm in diameter and 13.38 mm in height. The black aluminium bezel with tachymeter scale carries the "dot over 90", and the Alpha hands are filled with vintage-toned Super-LumiNova. The blue-grey dial owes its colour to a CVD coating that recreates the tone of some CK 2998 watches from the 1960s. It sits beneath a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal shaped like Hesalite, while the caseback shows the seahorse medallion engraved "THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE" and "OCTOBER 3, 1962". The watch is water-resistant to 5 bar, and Omega offers it on a stainless steel bracelet or on black or brown leather straps. Further models of the line can be found in the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and Omega Speedmaster categories.
