Tissot T-Sport Sideral
(3 items)When the first sporty Tissot Sideral was presented in 1969, it amounted to a small revolution. Its futuristic fiberglass case was trailblazing for its time and stood out from traditional steel or gold watch cases.
The successor model introduced in 1971, the Sideral S, additionally brought with it a sporty, colorful design that broke away entirely from conventional watch models. Instead of classic numerals and hour markers, only indices and seconds scales were visible, complemented by colorful regatta counting scales at 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock. It was a bold design that reflected the contemporary pursuit of innovation and modernity. Now Tissot is continuing this special line and, with the Sideral 2023, blends old virtues with new innovations.
Comparison: Technology and Design from 1969 to 2023 – The Evolution of the Sideral
The original Tissot Sideral from 1969 and the modern 2023 model equally embody the brand's pursuit of progress and innovation. While the 1969 model was groundbreaking with its avant-garde fiberglass case and minimalist design, the Tissot Sideral Powermatic 80 shows how the brand has preserved and further developed this pioneering spirit.
The Tissot Sideral currently brings modern technology to the wrist with the proven Powermatic 80 movement, which offers an impressive power reserve of up to 80 hours. At the same time, however, it retains the heritage and character of the original by integrating design elements and the unmistakable spirit of the 1969 model. It is a perfect fusion of old and new, where tradition meets contemporary technology and design. Reinterpreted, the Sideral, available in yellow, red and blue, retains the striking dial, the generous indexing without main numerals, as well as the fiberglass case. The new Sideral sees itself as a continuation of the 1971 Sideral S with a 41 mm case diameter and a striking look. New are the 300 meters of water resistance as well as the quick-change system for the colorful, perforated rubber strap. While the strap is and remains characteristic of the series, the clasp is an innovation.
A Way Out of the (Quartz) Crisis?
Despite its unique appearance and innovative features, Tissot introduced the Sideral S at a time when the watch industry was being turned upside down by the emerging quartz watches. To assert itself in this new market environment, Tissot sought ways to stand out through bold models and innovative materials. What we today call retro or vintage design is a great success for the Swiss brand, as watch lines such as the Tissot Infirmière pocket watch but also the Tissot Heritage collection currently prove impressively.
