Since 100 hand beats per second come with extreme energy consumption, Zenith's engineers devised an ingenious solution: when the chronograph function of the Defy El Primero 21 is deactivated, the time display is ensured by a regular 5-hertz escapement (36,000 vibrations per hour) with 50 hours of power reserve. Only when the stop function is started does the separate, ten-times-faster chronograph escapement engage. The El Primero 21 displays its power reserve of around 50 minutes by means of a red, highly legible bar below the 12 o'clock position.
