« Simple Distinctions for Watch Newcomers »

If you're just starting out on your passion for fine timepieces, you'll quickly notice the incredible diversity of the watch world. From chronographs to automatic and hand-wound watches to quartz models, the many different types of watches can be confusing. We bring some clarity and explain the most important terms so you can join the conversation and find the ideal companion for your preferences.

Mechanical or Electronic: Which Movement Is Inside?

The most important distinction between different types of watches concerns how they are powered, in other words, how the hands are set in motion. Broadly speaking, two concepts can be distinguished: mechanical and electronic movements. Let's first look at the traditional option, mechanical. With a tradition stretching back centuries, it is as familiar from church clocks and historic wall clocks as it is from pocket watches and the navigational instruments of the great seafarers. Its basic principle is the storage of potential energy in a spring, which releases its force in carefully measured doses through a gear train to an escapement, the movement's timekeeping regulator.

Once the stored energy is used up, new energy has to be supplied. In this context, two different types of watches can be distinguished: with hand-wound watches, energy can only be supplied manually (usually by turning the crown), while automatic watches have a so-called winding rotor, which turns as the watch moves and winds the mainspring in the process. A brilliant concept: regular wear is enough to give the wristwatch, in theory, unlimited endurance. In most cases, automatic watches can also be wound by hand, so you can give them a manual boost of energy whenever you like.

Electronic Movements: From Quartz to Solar

A far more modern concept that became popular from the 1960s onward is electronic movements, which in turn can be divided into different types of watches. The most significant of these are quartz watches, which draw their power from a button cell (battery) that typically only needs replacing after a few years. With their considerably higher accuracy and lower purchase price, quartz watches have practical advantages over mechanical models, but they can't match the emotional character of gear trains, wheels, and springs. Digital watches are also battery-powered; unlike the typical quartz model, they have a digital display rather than an analog dial with hands. Digital watches reached their peak in the eighties, but they still impress today with their versatility – from stopwatch and world time all the way to a calculator.

Within quartz technology, several types of watches can be distinguished. Particularly popular are radio-controlled watches, which work on exactly the same principle as conventional quartz watches but additionally receive a regular radio signal to correct the time display. This brings the rate deviation (=inaccuracy) down to zero. The German manufacturer Junghans is one of the few brands known for high-quality radio-controlled watches. Another concept is solar watches, whose electrical energy storage is charged by incoming light. In a sense, this makes solar watches the automatic watches of the electronic timepiece world.

Chronograph vs. Chronometer: Easy to Confuse!

Besides distinguishing by power source, watches can also be classified by function. One important type is the chronograph, defined by its stopwatch function and usually easy to recognize by the pushers next to the crown. Famous examples include the Omega Speedmaster and the Rolex Daytona.

Chronographs can be either mechanical or electronic. A special variant is the flyback chronograph, which stops, resets, and restarts the timing with a single press of a button. This should be clearly distinguished from the term chronometer, which describes a watch that meets certain precision standards. These are tested by organizations such as the COSC (the official Swiss chronometer testing institute); if the watch meets the requirements, it receives what is known as a chronometer certificate. If a watch has a COSC certificate, for example, its maximum daily rate deviation may be -4/+6 seconds.

From Dive Watch to Dress Watch: Types of Watches by Purpose

Regardless of its functions and caliber (=movement), every wrist instrument can be assigned to one or more specific purposes. One of the most popular types of watches is the dive watch (=diver), which focuses on high water resistance of at least 10 bar (100 meters) and a rugged build. Typical features include broad, highly legible hands and indices with generous luminous coating, as well as a unidirectional (=rotating in one direction only) bezel for timing. Arguably the most famous diver of all time is the Rolex Submariner.

Pilot's watches, or aviation watches, are also characterized by first-rate legibility, paired with large case diameters and usually a long history dating back to the early or mid-20th century. Pilot models often feature a chronograph function combined with a tachymeter scale, which allows you to measure average speeds. In the case of the prominent Breitling Navitimer, there is also an extensive slide rule, developed for numerous calculations in the cockpit (rates of climb, fuel consumption, etc.).

When talking about different types of watches, the dress watch must not be forgotten. Its focus is on a refined appearance with a slim case, fine lines, and a luxurious character. This type of watch is made for business meetings, upscale dinners, and gala evenings. Paired with an elegant outfit, however, it can also be worn every day. Many of the most exclusive Swiss watch brands, such as Breguet, Blancpain, and Patek Philippe, specialize in dress watches and equip them with the finest materials and the most complex additional functions (=complications).

Types of Watches by Complication

Complications are also a popular way of telling different types of watches apart. The universe of complications is endless: while world time watches such as the Chopard L.U.C Time Traveler One display several time zones simultaneously, alarm wristwatches (e.g., the Oris Big Crown ProPilot Alarm) ring at a preset time. There are also various calendar watches, from a simple date display to the perpetual calendar, which mechanically accounts for all month lengths and leap years. Even rarer and extremely expensive are high-end watches featuring the most elaborate complications, from the tourbillon to the minute repeater. These also explain why there are models priced in the six- to seven-figure range – territory that seems unbelievable, especially to newcomers.

Endless Variety: The World of Watch Types

If you look at the different types of watches, you'll discover numerous other categories beyond the models explained so far. Take tool and military watches, for example, which are optimized for technical reliability and maximum durability under harsh conditions. A leader in this field is the Frankfurt-based brand Sinn, which even offers special editions for emergency physicians and firefighters. True oddities are single-hand watches, which have one large hour hand instead of separate hour and minute hands. In addition to 12-hour versions, 24-hour variants (one rotation of the hand per day) are also available. A well-known manufacturer specializing in single-hand watches is the Münster-based brand MeisterSinger.
