At this point, anyone who is not incessantly involved with exclusive timepieces is wondering: What are panda watches? The technical term refers to an aesthetic with distinct color contrasts between the dial and the subdials. These so-called totalizers should be in black on “true pandas” and stand out against a white background. The Rolex Daytona Cosmograph is aesthetically and technically a masterpiece of Swiss watchmaking. It becomes a minor matter whether the design corresponds to the original pandas or is to be rated as a semi-panda wristwatch. In 729 million years, it will still run precisely to the second: The NPL-CsF2 atomic clock in London. Neither quartz watches nor mechanical timekeepers can match this precision. But which brands do you have to visit to find the most accurate mechanical watches? From Breitling to Zenith, our magazine shows you the most accurate automatic movements in the industry and explains why luck also plays a role in the purchase.

Gear deviation: measurement of precision

To determine how accurate a wristwatch is, the daily deviation from perfect time is measured. If this were zero seconds, we could speak of perfect precision and the timepiece would be a serious competitor for the NPL-CsF2 atomic clock. In reality, however, this is never the case: even quartz clocks, which are known for their exceptional accuracy, move away from atomic time by a few seconds per year. An exception are radio-controlled clocks, which do not generate permanent rate deviations due to their regular synchronization with international time signal transmitters. In the mechanical universe, however, different standards apply: top-of-the-range watches stay within the window of -2/+2 seconds daily, but even five seconds difference would be a reasonable value. In the entry-level range of mechanical watches, even 20 seconds of rate deviation per day can be tolerated. Of course, these are not the most accurate watches in the industry.

Rolex: From Datejust 41 to Submariner the strictest criteria

These days, many watch enthusiasts question whether the prices of new Rolex watches are still justified. However, there is one thing that cannot be debated: The rigorous precision standards of the traditional Geneva brand. While the COSC still allows deviations of -4/+6 seconds a day to pass in its testing procedures, watches with the five-pointed crown in their latest generation of calibers must meet -2/+2 second accuracy. The Rolex Datejust 41 was one of the first watches to enjoy the pleasure of what is currently Rolex’s most accurate self-winding 3235 movement: Thanks to a new barrel, the patented Chronergy escapement with Parachrom hairspring and other technical details, the manufacture movement is not only extremely precise, but also has a considerable power reserve of 70 hours.

Breitling, Tag Heuer and Co.: Many brands rely on COSC

Compliance with such extremely precise standards of accuracy involves a great deal of technical effort and is difficult to achieve, especially in lower price ranges. Many manufacturers from entry-level to high-end therefore rely on the standardized, globally recognized testing procedure of the official Swiss chronometer testing body COSC. Even Rolex has its watches issued the coveted certificate and additionally applies its more stringent in-house criteria. Consequently, by no means all COSC-certified timepieces are equally precise; if you’re looking for the most accurate watches, Breitling, for example, is the place to go. In addition to the in-house B01 automatic movement, the B20, developed in cooperation with Tudor and used in the Breitling Superocean Heritage II, also stands out for its accurate rate. Durable and technically balanced, it is respected throughout the industry, offering 70 hours of endurance and meeting COSC guidelines with flying colors.

In addition to the Breitling Superocean Heritage II, the TAG Heuer Carrera Caliber 36 deserves a special mention: To build the automatic movement, the Swiss manufacturer used the technical know-how of LVMH’s sister company Zenith, which has one of the most precise and best movements of all time in its program with the El Primero. Its high frequency of five hertz, which plays into the cards of a precise gait, is adopted by the TAG Heuer Carrera Caliber 36 and paired with a 50-hour power reserve. If you’re looking for the most accurate watches at relatively affordable prices, you’ve come to the right place.

Omega: METAS certificate for highest accuracy

More stringent in comparison to the COSC is the precision measurement of the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS), which has gained a high profile primarily through Omega, but is in principle open to all brands. In order to identify the most accurate mechanical watches, METAS, in contrast to the COSC, carries out precision measurement in six instead of five layers, tests entire watches instead of pure movements, and attaches importance to a high magnetic field resistance of 15,000 gauss. Eight different tests must be completed under the influence of this magnetic field, and the watches must not deviate more than 5 seconds a day from perfect time.

A prime example of the performance of METAS movements is the caliber 8800 in the Omega Planet Ocean 600M: its free sprung balance with silicon hairspring ensures exceptional longevity and precision, while the rhodium-plated finish with Côtes de Genève arabesques is a highlight for the eye. Not to be missed is the in-house Co-Axial escapement. Despite 600 meters of water resistance, the Omega Planet Ocean manages to reveal its precise beauty through a glass back. 55 hours of power reserve is a decent value.

Zenith El Primero: King of precise chronograph movements

Zenith comes closer to the accuracy of radio-controlled watches than any other mechanical brand. Although the “normal” El Primero calibers are already extremely precise with their beat frequency of five hertz, the Defy collection breaks records with the Inventor: the technical masterpiece achieves an incredible 18 hertz (129,600 vibrations per hour) thanks to the in-house, patented Zenith Oscillator in caliber 9100, which replaces around 30 components of a standard movement in one piece. The precision of this Zenith El Primero is in heavenly spheres: A maximum of 0.3 seconds of rate deviation per day sets new standards for mechanical watches.

Variance: Why precision is a matter of luck

A glance at the precision standards of COSC, METAS and others reveals that the accuracy of mechanical watches can only ever be guaranteed within a certain range, such as -5/+5 seconds of daily rate deviation. In plain language, this means that every watch ticks a little differently, which is due not only to tiny mechanical differences, but also to the smallest differences in regulation. You have to keep in mind that one day comprises 86,400 seconds; if two watches differ by five seconds, the continuity of production is still impressive. Whether you as a buyer get a specimen close to the zero-second limit or the five-second maximum deviation is a matter of luck.

Junghans: accurate radio-controlled watches for absolute precision

Whether it’s Junghans Force or Junghans Spektrum, anyone looking for perfect precision synchronized with atomic time signal transmitters should set their sights on the radio-controlled collections from the traditional Black Forest brand. You can’t be lucky or unlucky here, because the modern radio technology achieves the same result in every watch. The all-ceramic Junghans Force is particularly modern and minimalist, while the Junghans Spektrum follows a more traditional aesthetic with Arabic numerals and a ceramic bicolor stainless steel case.

Timepieces with the name suffix “chronometer” enjoy a high reputation, although the exact meaning of the term is not clear to everyone. In today’s article, we clarify the question of what distinguishes chronometer watches and present the most popular models from renowned top brands in different price ranges. You will also learn how three of the most important certificates differ and by which manufacturers they are used.

Chronometer: Definition and main certificates

One of the most common mistakes among watch novices is the confusion between chronometers and chronographs. While the chronograph is a complication (additional function) that enables time stopping in addition to the regular time display, the chronometer describes a precision watch that has received a certificate of chronometer testing from a neutral official institution. To obtain the latter, fine-tuning (regulation) of the time indicator in various positions and at varying temperatures is required. The focus of chronometer testing is whether the time indicator meets specified precision standards. Simply put, chronometer watches are proven to be particularly precise watches.

Timepieces can be awarded their coveted status by various inspection bodies. The most famous is called COSC (Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres), is used by most manufacturers and essentially tests whether a movement (still unassembled) has a rate deviation that falls below -4 and +6 seconds daily. More stringent is the METAS chronometer test, which is conducted by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology and tests fully assembled watches under demanding conditions. METAS chronometer watches must not deviate from perfect time by more than -5/+5 seconds per day. METAS cooperates closely with Omega, but in theory can be freely used by all brands. In contrast, Rolex‘s “Superlative Chronometer” title is reserved only for the brand’s own luxury watches, is additionally carried out after the completion of a successful COSC test, and requires a maximum deviation of -2/+2 seconds.

METAS: Omega’s precision watches

Launched by Omega in 2015 with the ambition of improving the precision standards of the COSC, the METAS certificate is one of the most prestigious awards in the watch world. Successful “examinees” are allowed to call themselves Master Chronometer watches, which comes with a high status, especially due to the certification of at least 15,000 Gauss magnetic resistance. Interestingly, every METAS movement has already successfully passed a COSC test beforehand. The new generation Speedmaster Moonwatch, launched in 2021, is among the most prominent bearers of the title: equipped with the hand-wound caliber 3861, it offers 50 hours of power reserve and uses a silicon hairspring to ensure long-term accuracy at the highest level.

Automatic chronometers can also be found en masse in Omega’s variety of models – from the robust Seamaster collections to the elegant De Ville. However, some models, such as the popular Speedmaster 38, “only” have a regular COSC certificate. By 2023, Omega aims to change this and call all of its models Master Chronometer watches. Other brands have also recognized the potential of METAS testing – since 2021, for example, Tudor has been awarding its Black Bay with the strict certificate.

Breitling: Each watch has a COSC certificate

Breitling, on the other hand, places its full trust in the proven reliability of the COSC test, which was introduced in 1973, and has been launching all its models as chronometer watches for years without exception. Whether it’s the aviation icon Navitimer, diving legend Superocean or compact ladies’ models like the Chronomat 32 – no flying B makes it to the wrist without an officially certified precision test. That’s especially important for Breitling newcomers to know, because the manufacturer differentiates strongly in price between manufacture movements like the popular B01 and purchased movements based on ETA. The additional price of around 2,000 to 3,000 euros, which has to be paid for the manufacture movement in collections like the Superocean Heritage, is therefore not paid for noticeably higher accuracy, but for 70 hours of power reserve, the complex column wheel mechanism and other technical highlights.

Legendary classics such as the Navitimer 1 B01 Chronograph 43, which already live up to the official distinction in the title and leave no doubt about their certified precision, enjoy the greatest popularity. Those who like it particularly imposing will make the right choice with the new Super Chronomat in the 44-millimeter format.

Rolex: Tighter in-house testing

Rolex’s automatic timekeepers are among the most rigorously tested watches in the industry. Since 2015, in parallel with the launch of the new generation of movements with a whopping 70-hour power reserve (see caliber 3255), the industry’s most famous luxury brand has been awarding the title of Superlative Chronometer to watches that have already successfully passed a COSC test and, after being encased, also pass its in-house testing, which requires extremely low rate deviations of no more than -2/+2 seconds. Power reserve, water resistance, automatic winding and other technical aspects must also meet the toughest requirements.

The prime example of certified horology is the current Submariner Ref. 124060 with caliber 3230, whose blue Parachrom hairspring is one of the central highlights of the modern generation of movements. The brand new Datejust Generation of 2022 (Ref. 126300) with the automatic chronometer caliber 3235 also demonstrates how the Geneva-based luxury brand lives up to its great name through technical excellence. The fact that the superlative timepieces are always accompanied by a COSC certificate creates double security for customers and the certainty that, despite high in-house standards, there is still an independent party involved.

Tag Heuer, Junghans and Co.: COSC as an upgrade

Breitling’s practice of differentiating in its product portfolio between chronometer watches and lower-priced alternatives without the certificate is widespread in the industry. Tag Heuer, for example, tends to ship its entry-level models without COSC testing, while higher-positioned editions have the official precision certificate. The automatic chronographs in the current Tag Heuer Carrera collection (e.g. Ref. CBN2A1A.FC6537) are among the most sought-after models in the brand’s portfolio, powered by the Heuer 02 manufacture movement and boasting a COSC certificate. The same goes for the Autavia Flyback, which performs the stopping, resetting and restarting of its chronograph function with a single push of a button. The entry-level Formula 1 collection also has a COSC certificate in its upscale versions, which can be awarded for quartz movements as well as for mechanical calibers.

The traditional German brand Junghans also gives buyers of its prominent Meister collection the choice between chronometer watches and regular timepieces. One of the most sought-after models among precision lovers is the Meister Ref. 027/4130.00, which combines silvered elegance in the dial with timeless shapes and an automatic movement including an exposed case back.

Did you know that the first Navitimer from 1952 did not have a Breitling logo on the dial? Instead, it was adorned with the emblem of the world’s largest pilots’ association, AOPA, without which the legendary chronograph would never have existed. Now, on the 70th anniversary of the world-famous pilot’s watch, hopes are rising for a new edition of the legendary Breitling AOPA. We assess the chances for the much-awaited limited edition and explain what links the Swiss luxury brand with the U.S. organization.

The mission: Willy Breitling and the AOPA

It’s no secret that Breitling’s most famous chronograph is linked to aviation like no other watch. But why does this close relationship actually exist? For the answer, we need to travel back to 1952, when the former company boss Willy Breitling (1912-1979), grandson of the brand’s founder Léon Breitling, is commissioned by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) to develop a new chronograph for its members. The result arrived the same year and was spectacular: equipped with the famous slide rule on a logarithmic basis, still included in the Navitimer today, the instrument allowed a variety of precise calculations above the clouds. In addition to average speed and distance traveled, the 41-millimeter time stop, which is enormous by the standards of the time, can also be used to determine fuel consumption and the rate of climb and descent.

The conversion of various units, for example from (sea) miles to kilometers, was also among the important tasks performed by the Breitling in the mechanical cockpits of the 1950s. Externally, the early pilot’s watch, like its modern descendants, is characterized by a black dial with luminous Arabic numerals and, with the grippy beads of its rotating bezel, has a feature that inspires its iconic status to this day.

Undercover: The first models for pilots only

The special feature of the first Navitimer AOPA: It bears no reference number and omits any mentions of the Swiss manufacturer on the dial. No Breitling brand name or logo is visible; instead, a winged AOPA emblem is displayed below the 12 o’clock position, which could be mistaken for the similar-looking Breitling logo from a distance. The reason for the anonymity lies in the absolute focus on AOPA specifications; marketing is basically unnecessary, as the chronograph is issued exclusively to members of the American Pilots Association from 1954. These watches, distributed to members of the organization, have a signed wing logo.

From 1955, a version with an unsigned AOPA emblem is added, which is available on the open market and finds great appeal in the celebrity world of the time – in addition to the jazz musician of the century Miles Davis, film star Serge Gainsbourg and Formula 1 luminary Graham Hill also opt for a Navitimer AOPA. It is not until 1956 that the pilot’s watch is officially marketed with the Breitling name and without the AOPA logo. It is given the reference number 806, which is a sacred number in Breitling fan circles today.

Pilot Scholarship: Anniversary Kick-Off

At the start of 2022, the eyes of the industry will once again be on AOPA, as the association’s former standard instrument celebrates a big anniversary. 70 years of Navitimer are reason enough for a lively party – the only question is how the big occasion will be celebrated. The watch brand and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association delivered a cautious prelude to the celebration in December 2021, when they jointly unveiled the Breitling Scholarship for Pilots. Young aviators from the U.S. could apply until February 11, 2022, for a chance to fully fund their pilot training. This collaboration is the first cooperation between the two alliance partners on the occasion of the 70th anniversary and Breitling already emphasized last December that it will not be the last.

Will 70 years of Navitimer be celebrated with a special edition?

Thus, it is certain that enthusiasts can look forward to further surprises. It is uncertain whether the vague announcement refers to the reissue of the Navitimer AOPA, which could possibly appear in the form of a limited edition. The problem: While the comeback of the pilot’s watch without the Breitling logo seems plausible due to its exact origin in 1952, the history of the Navitimer is long and offers numerous other clues to which an anniversary model could refer. But the mere fact that there is renewed activity between Breitling and AOPA with the scholarship, we interpret as a strong indication of a coming special model. Why would the two successful partners join forces for the purpose of a scholarship, only to then directly downgrade their contact again? That doesn’t make any sense. Whether the hotly anticipated watch will be a limited edition and which logo it will have on the dial is of secondary importance for now.

It would not be the first AOPA Limited Edition

If we take a look at Breitling’s recent history, there are increasing indications that an AOPA Limited Edition will soon be released. Back in 2015, the Grenchen-based company launched a Navitimer AOPA, which was limited to 500 pieces and displayed clear differences from the classic Breitling Navitimer. Like the original from the 1950s, the limited edition featured the AOPA logo in the dial, which however did not stand alone, but was accompanied by the Swiss brand and model lettering. Red contrasts, for example in the form of a “Limited Edition” lettering above the 6 o’clock totalizer, characterized the look of the special edition. A preview of the upcoming AOPA watch? Probably, because nowadays a branding entirely without visible Breitling markings would not be the smartest thing to do from a marketing perspective.

Plausible assumptions regarding the upcoming special edition

What will probably change compared to the 2015 model is the drive. While the former AOPA reissue was powered by a modified ETA Valjoux 7753, manufacture movements are more important nowadays and are likely to be found in important anniversary models in particular. In terms of dimensions, we don’t expect a 46-millimeter behemoth, but historically plausible diameters between 40 and 42 millimeters. In 2015, they went for 42 millimeters, which would have earned a mention for special compactness in the Breitling universe at the time. So is the 2015 AOPA coming back with a manufacture movement and a slight facelift? We don’t know, but it’s a plausible assumption.

Since its debut, the Breitling AVI (Ref. 765 1953) Re-Edition has been celebrated by brand enthusiasts: Conceived as a tribute to the legendary “Co-Pilot” of 1953, the re-edition inspires with its amazing closeness to the historic original and combines great tradition with modern mechanics. From 2022, additional emotions will be created by five brand-new Classic AVI watches, which will keep the pilot’s watch company with its XXL diameter and fighter plane DNA.

Comeback of an icon

Outside the world of watches, there are only a handful of timepieces with universal recognition. The Rolex Datejust or the Omega Seamaster featured in the James Bond movies are such examples. And certainly the Breitling Navitimer, often dubbed the most famous pilot’s watch of all time, is one of them. In the unprecedented fame of the classic watch with its distinctive slide rule, introduced in 1952, another icon of post-war history is almost forgotten: The Breitling AVI Ref. 765, which was launched a year after the Navitimer and quickly earned the nickname “co-pilot.” Like the second man in the cockpit, the model is an important complement to the Navitimer at the time.

Not everyone likes the complex appearance of the slide rule and is all the more pleased with the simple, robust design. In appearance, the Breitling AVI is a tribute to the Swiss manufacturer’s functional on-board watches from the 1930s and 40s, not necessarily known for their beauty. Few contemporaries would have expected that these watches would receive a tribute almost 70 years later. In 2020, the moment of glory arrives: with the Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition (Ref. AB0920131B1X1), the Co-Pilot returns to the limelight and, with a limited edition of 1,953 pieces, finds its way onto the wrists of aviation enthusiasts and brand fans.

Only the technology is modern – plus two small details

The exclusivity begins on the case back, where the lettering “ONE OF 1953” reveals: this pilot’s watch is not ready-made. But one thing at a time. The stainless steel case of the Re-Edition measures 41.1 millimeters, which not coincidentally corresponds to the exact diameter of the historical prototype – the complete new edition is modeled on the historical prototype down to the smallest detail.

The journey through time continues with the all-black dial, whose Superluminova coating is applied by hand and is identical in color to the luminous color of the 1950s model. The shape of the dial has also been precisely adapted to the first Breitling AVI.

Like the original, the totalizers appear in the same color as the rest of the dial. Even the syringe shape of the central hands is unchanged from the original. Inside the pilot’s watch, modernity reigns supreme. The watches from 2020 are fueled by Breitling’s manufacture caliber B09, which is largely identical to the B01, but replaces its automatic movement with a traditional hand-wound one. The 21st century benefits include COSC certification and 70 hours of power reserve.

Even more strictly limited: Breitling AVI in noble metals

Those who want to celebrate the ticking tradition with an additional prestigious case material can replace the stainless steel case with an 18-karat rose gold version (Ref. RB0920131B1X1). Limited to 253 pieces, it swaps the black leather strap of the regular Classic AVI watches for a vintage-style brown variant. The pinnacle of luxury is a platinum version limited to 153 pieces (Ref. LB0920131C1X1) with a blue dial and gold leather strap.

Both noble metal editions have an exclusive engraving with their respective number of pieces on the case back, are water-resistant to 30 meters and are powered by the same hand-wound movement as the stainless steel model.

Relatives with style: The Aviator 8 editions

All three new versions are grouped under the umbrella of the new Classic AVI collection, whose members have a close historical connection to the early history of the Swiss company. An established family member is the Aviator 8 Chronograph 43, whose name comes from the legendary Huit (French “huit” for “eight”) Aviation Department. Founded in 1938 by Willy Breitling, the special department was responsible for the production of the company’s highest-quality pilot’s watches in its time and established the myth surrounding Breitling’s on-board watches.

Fueled by non-manufacture movements, the Aviator 8 Chronograph 43 scores higher on affordability and exists in several special edition models – the most popular being the military green Curtiss Warhawk (Ref. A133161A1L1X1) and the black, red and white Mosquito (Ref. AB01194A1B1X1). Those who prefer simple elegance over elaborate chronographs will also find what they are looking for in the Classic AVI watches: The Automatic Day & Date 41 (Ref. A45330101B1X1) compresses the date, time and day of the week in a timelessly distinguished design.

Next Generation: New Super Aviator in Goliath format

From spring 2022, the Classic AVI watches are complemented by five newcomers that measure a whopping 46 instead of 41 millimeters in diameter and are therefore entitled to bear the name “Super Aviator”. Each model in the new collection pays homage to one of the most important fighter planes of the 1940s, with the legendary North American P-51 Mustang receiving two editions.

Firstly, a stainless steel version with a black dial (Ref. AB04453A1B1X1), secondly, an 18-karat red gold version with an anthracite front (Ref. RB04451A1B1X1). It is the only model made of noble metal.

Back in the steel world, we encounter the elegant Tribute to Vought F4U Corsair (Ref. AB04451A1C1X1) honoring the U.S. fighter plane with gull wings, as well as the military-looking Curtiss Warhawk (Ref. AB04452A1L1X1) in green design.

The most striking is the Super AVI B04 Chronograph GMT 46 Mosquito (Ref. YB04451A1B1X1) with black ceramic bezel, white contrasting totalizers and red accents. This pays tribute to the legendary De Havilland DH.98 “Wooden Wonder” which, despite being made of wood, was one of the fastest aircrafts of the 1940s.

All five Super Aviator editions are powered by Breitling’s in-house manufacture B04 movement, which adopts the technology of the better-known B01 with its ratchet wheel control and vertical clutch – 70-hour power reserve and COSC certificate included. An added bonus: 100 meters of water resistance, which sets the Super AVI noticeably apart from the 30 meters of the AVI 1953.
