Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 – a synonym for luxury and functionality
All over the world Rolex watches are well-known, but only few people know that Rolex is just a made-up word. The company's founder Hans Wilsdorf did never tell anything about its origin. Above all, the name was good to vocalise and could easily be printed upon the watches' clock face. Wilsdorf was not only a genius in watchmaking but also a visionary and clever marketing strategist. So he gave his first water-resistant wristwatch to Mercedes Gleitze, the first female swimmer who wanted to cross the English Channel. Unfortunately she had to break up the attempt to set a new record because of bad weather conditions, but the watch stayed tight. A few years later, Rolex Oyster Perpetual was developed as the first waterproof watch with automatic clockwork.
Oyster Perpetual 36 watches: classically timeless and elegant
In 1931 Rolex launched the Oyster Perpetual series. Still today the look of these luxury timepieces remained almost unchanged, only the models with a dial diameter 36 millimetres are an innovation. Yet the current wristwatches appear like homage to the first watch from the year 1931. Wristbands and closures are made of stainless steel and the watches' watertightness ranges up to 100 metres. Of course, all Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 wristwatches are automatic watches with 42 hours power reserve. Sapphire glass covers blue, silver or black dials with numerals, lines and a second hand – that means pure elegance in perfection. Due to simplicity and reduction to the essential, these luxury timepieces turned into favoured classics for a lot of gents and many a lady.
